Role Description:
The DER Policy & Reform Principal is a newly created 24-month max term contract opportunity in our Policy and Social Value team based at our Perth Central Park location. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Western Australia’s electricity sector by leading Synergy’s engagement in Distributed Energy Resources (DER) policy and market reform.
Operating at the intersection of public policy, government relations, and electricity market transformation, the DER Policy & Reform Principal role is responsible for driving the development of policies and regulatory frameworks that support the integration of DER into the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). The successful candidate will work collaboratively across Synergy and with key external stakeholders to advocate for policy outcomes that align with our strategic objectives and the broader goals of DER initiatives.
Job responsibilities:
- Leading Synergy’s policy and market reform initiatives to support the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the electricity grid, ensuring alignment with the objectives of projects.
- Advocating for the development of DER policy positions and market reform to better enable the integration of DER into the WA’s electricity market.
- Providing a whole of Synergy perspective and understanding of DER energy related matters to determine the most appropriate pathway for DER integration in the WEM.
- Collaborating with internal teams, project partners, regulatory bodies, government agencies, and industry stakeholders to ensure DER-related policies and market rules are aligned with both project and Synergy’s strategic goals.
- Conducting comprehensive research and analysis of market rules, policies, and regulatory frameworks to develop evidence-based recommendations and prepare internal position papers.
What you will bring:
- Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as public policy, law, energy, economics, or engineering.
- 5+ years’ experience working in a related role within policy, government, or the energy sector).
- Strong understanding of the WEM, Australian energy policy, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven ability to lead complex projects and manage diverse stakeholder interests.
- Experience assessing corporate communications with a clear understanding of their policy and regulatory implications.
