Role Description:
The Energy Trader is an exciting opportunity within our Trading Team based at our Perth Central Park office.
Energy Traders are responsible for executing real time trades to optimise Synergy’s position through analysis established from a deep understanding of the key short-term drivers, such as generation, demand, transmission, and regulation.
Your work will be varied and will offer you the opportunity to develop your commercial, financial, and strategic skills. Energy Traders collaborate with other members of the Trading Team to develop sophisticated models and produce research which will enhance the high-quality analytical capabilities of the team and improve our trading strategies. The aim of the Trading Team is the efficient short-term optimisation of Synergy’s portfolio, with a focus on operational performance and financial growth. You will also undertake an in-house training program to learn to trade in electricity and gas markets. The trading desk operates on a 24 / 7 basis to meet our operational requirements and requires Energy Traders to participate in a 24 / 7 roster.
Job responsibilities:
- Execute real-time electricity and gas trading activities to optimise Synergy’s portfolio while managing commercial, operational and market risk.
- Monitor market conditions, portfolio performance and operational constraints to identify opportunities and support timely trading decisions.
- Prepare and submit market offers and other trading activities in accordance with market rules, internal controls and approved strategies.
- Develop and enhance analytical models and decision-support tools to improve dispatch, fuel and portfolio optimisation.
- Collaborate with operational teams and key stakeholders to implement trading strategies, support new assets and continually improve trading processes and systems.
What you will bring:
- A tertiary qualification (Quantitative disciplines are an advantage).
- Strong numerical and analytical capability, with the ability to interpret complex information and convert large datasets into clear, actionable insights.
- Sound judgement and composure, with the ability to make timely decisions using incomplete or rapidly changing information.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and explain complex concepts to different audiences.
- Proficiency with analytical and modelling tools, with experience in Power BI, Python, R, SQL, VBA or energy-market systems considered an advantage.
