Role Description:

The Governance Principal is a newly created opportunity in our Regulation and Compliance team, based at our Perth Central Park location. This senior subject matter expert role is responsible for leading the development and oversight of governance and compliance frameworks for the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) in close collaboration with our Thermal Generation, Wholesale, and Future Energy operational business units.

The successful candidate will play a strategic role in ensuring regulatory alignment, advocating Synergy’s interests in external forums and processes, identifying commercial opportunities within the WEM regulatory framework, and advising executive leadership on emerging risks, Synergy’s WEM governance performance and market developments. This role is critical to shaping regulatory outcomes, fostering a culture of proactive compliance, and supporting Synergy’s strategic objectives in a dynamic and evolving energy landscape.

Job responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of effective governance and compliance frameworks for the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), consistent with good industry practice.
  • Provide strategic and timely regulatory advice to internal stakeholders, supporting informed decision-making across the business.
  • Coordinate WEM incident remediation, internal, and external reporting.
  • Coordinate Synergy’s regulatory submissions to influence market reforms and regulatory changes that align with business objectives.
  • Identify and promote opportunities for commercial advantage within the WEM regulatory framework.
  • Drive continuous improvement in WEM compliance practices, fostering a proactive compliance culture through stakeholder engagement and education.

What you will bring:

  • 3+ years proven experience in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) as a participant, regulator, policy maker, or advisor, with a deep understanding of market operations and regulatory frameworks.
  • Tertiary qualification in Governance, Law, Business, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex regulatory requirements, particularly WEM rules and procedures.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with a track record of advising senior leaders and influencing regulatory and commercial outcomes as well as empowering others to have a better WEM understanding.
  • A proactive, strategic mindset with the ability to identify opportunities, manage risk, and drive continuous improvement in governance and compliance practices.
